FAQs

What is couples therapy?

Couples therapy or couples counseling is 'talk' therapy with both partners present. Whereas individual therapy delves into a single person's perspective, past, and patterns—we'll focus on your partnership in couples therapy. In other words, couples therapy is not individual counseling side by side.

I am a Gottman-trained therapist. The Gottman method provides a highly effective framework for working with troubled relationships.

As your therapist, I will teach you healthy communication and coping skills. With practice, you can dramatically improve how you connect, understand, and meet each other's needs.

My ultimate goal is to phase myself out of your relationship journey and provide you with the tools you need—so you feel confident moving forward without me, continuing to upgrade your relationship skills.

Are you going to judge me or my partner or both of us?

Of course not! My job as a therapist is to provide a safe environment for couples where I listen with unconditional positive regard. In each session, I'll teach you the skills you need, so you no longer need couples counseling.

Are you going to take my partner’s side?

Nope! I am here to treat, help, and guide you as a couple. What I love about the Gottman method is it's an effective framework that focuses on the couple rather than one individual at a time.

Do you work with couples who belong to the LGBTQ+ community?

Absolutely.

Do we need to be married or living together to try couples counseling?

No—but you do need to be in a committed relationship.

How much does couples counseling cost?

The assessment sessions (first four appointments) — $600

Your assessment sessions can be paid in full in advance or per session. Per session rates are:

1st session: 90-minute couples session — $175
2nd session: 55-minute individual session with one partner — $125
3rd session: 55-minute individual session with one partner — $125
4th session: 90-minute couples sessions — $175

After the initial four assessment sessions, each 90-minute couples counseling appointment is $175.

How long will couples counseling take?

This depends on your goals and commitment to the process. Couples counseling can take anywhere from six weeks to six months or longer. In cases where there has been infidelity, effective couples counseling could take six months to one year.

Do you take insurance?

I do not accept insurance; however, many of my clients are able to pay with an HSA/FSA card. I offer counseling services receipts, which you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Every insurance company is different, so you'll want to ask your provider if reimbursement is possible.
